Mathemalchemy’s Cryptography Quilt on View at MoMath

We finally visited the new MoMath location, which was just a short walk from their previous home. Many of our favorite exhibits were still on view, like the square bikes, and the puzzle section, plus some new ones.

I almost missed this really cool traveling exhibit called MATHEMALCHEMY. A group of mathy artists (artsy mathematicians?) got together to create this large piece, and you would need to walk around it a few times to get the full effect. Also, shout out to the MoMath staff members who have always been patient and helpful, especially the docent who walked us through this exhibit.

This Cryptography Quilt is just one of the many projects within this piece. Each square depicts a secret code, or something to do with codes and cyphers in general. The only thing I sort of recognize is the light house sending out dots and dashes, so I guess that’s Morse Code? Also, the lock in the middle has 1’s and 0’s, so I think that’s Binary Code? My knowledge of code-breaking never went beyond solving the puzzles on the back of cereal boxes, so your guesses are better than mine!

If you break any of the codes, please let me know!
