Touring the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Operational from 1829 to 1971, the Eastern State Penitentiary is a national historic landmark. Several areas were blocked off, for our safety, but, with the help of an audio guide, we visited sites like Al Capone’s [approximate] cell.

I didn’t take many pictures, struggling to stay with the group, and everyone kept going in different directions.

A tour guide led us through the prison’s medical area. Plus, contemporary exhibits offered a further dive into topics like prison reform, putting the penitentiary’s dark history into context.
