I Went Birding and Accidentally Explored an Abandoned Hospital

It started as a nature hike to see some migrating birds, and the next thing we knew, the park ranger directed us to an abandoned hospital.

I was really nervous at first, because I’m deathly afraid of rats. I wanted to stay outside, but the rangers assured us that the hospital’s ruins were well maintained, and in some areas, remodeled. They also cordoned off dangerous areas for safety reasons, so I guess there was no reason to be scared.

I gave it a shot, and planned to break away from the group if things got too scary for me. We stuck to the path, steering clear of any creepy crawlers. Some parts made me uneasy, especially pitch-black rooms, but overall it was okay.

I did well at first, but then froze when I heard bats screeching. The room was very dark, and I barely saw what was ahead of me, so I left quickly. Other brave explorers remained to take some photos, but I was like nope explored other rooms.

I wish I had a better handle on my camera, because many shots turned out very blurry.

A long hallway led to a bakery, according to a sign on the wall.

After the bakery, a room with a fireplace led us back outside.

We continued hiking. I didn’t find any migrating birds, but snapped a few monarch butterflies.

We also found a wild apple tree, sparking a debate about whether or not they were edible. I said no, others said yes.

Overall, we had a great time. This hike definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I don’t know if I would do it again, but I’m glad that I tried it at least once.
