I finally got through a few books on my reading list. I enjoy all types of books, lately drawn to historical narratives and memoirs.
Hollywood Park
I learned so much from Mikel Jollett’s memoir, and admire his bravery and strength. From inside views of a childhood in the Synanon cult, to reflections on his life, relationships, and career, this is probably one of the most raw and honest books that I have ever read. Thank you Mikel Jollett for writing Hollywood Park, and for sharing your life with us.
The Lowland
A tale set in Calcutta, two brothers drift apart over the years as their lives move in different directions, only to tragically converge again. Have you ever felt haunted by a book? This one stayed with me for a while after. Jhumpa Lahiri is a fantastic storyteller, and I really enjoyed The Lowland, as well as her other works.
The Chiffon Trenches
I listened to the Chiffon Trenches as an audiobook, narrated by the author André Leon Talley. After gaining much-needed perspective and insight into the fashion world, I will never see the industry in the same light again.
Elevation
A novella by Stephen King, Elevation is quite different from his other works, and a nice change of pace. Now don’t get me wrong, because I love a good scare, and I just finished season 2 of Castle Rock, a series based on his characters, but Elevation was a good find.
Wine and War
I read this one a while back, but recently revisited Wine and War with a fresh pair of eyes. I enjoy history books, and this one is very interesting, packed with in-depth accounts of the French wine industry, tied together with WWII military chronicles.
Next on my list are the Unidentified by Colin Dickey, which I just started, and Eat a Peach by David Chang. What are you reading? I’m always looking for new recommendations.
