These short films left an impression on me over the years. From documentaries to claymation, you can stream them right now.
Ten Meter Tower
Divers face their fears, one after another, in Ten Meter Tower. Filmmakers Maximilien van Aertryck and Alex Danielson brilliantly capture raw human emotion in this documentary.
Fired on Mars
This animated short is quite fantastical while also relatable. Fired on Mars follows an employee as he navigates his ever-evolving workplace dynamic.
Night Shift
A film by Marshall Tyler, Night Shift brings us along with Olly Jeffries for an evening at work. Excellent storytelling, editing, and a great all-around film.
Thunder Road
Shot in one take, Thunder Road reminds us that everyone grieves in their own way. If you like the short film, the feature-length premiered at SXSW and won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature.
Girl in the Hallway
Trigger warning — child abuse. I saw this at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. This heartbreaking short film is based on a true story. Girl in the Hallway is directed and animated by Valerie Barnhart, and narrated by Jamie DeWolf.
Negative Space
Based on a poem by Ron Koertge, Negative Space highlights the relationship between a father and his son through the simple act of packing luggage.
Fauve
Fauve takes us on a chilling journey with two childhood friends. Striking and terrifying, while also beautiful, I look forward to seeing more from filmmaker Jeremy Comte.
Maude
Teeny got caught up in a story, and just rolled with it. Maude had the entire audience laughing nonstop during the screening.
These are just a few of my favorites, there are too many more to name. I wanted to add a few horror shorts, but I think I’ll write a separate post for that one.
So, what are your favorite short films? I would love to hear your suggestions.
